Unity Tutorial 02

So in this weeks Unity tasks, we had to decorate our 2D game, this is probably my favourite aspect of the  2D game because I love decorating things and it’s fun to personalise especially when you’re making a game, although I’m not the best at it I still gave it a good try!

There wasn’t a lot of coding which I was happy about because I do find that part a little tedious and annoying because if you even get one letter or a dot in the wrong place you could be so stressed out to why nothings linking or working, but luckily, I didn’t have any errors doing it today.  We then learned how to create blocking movements for the players by using box colliders which just let the objects to collied, pretty sure we also used these in the first semester as well because the control rang a bell

The tutorial this week was a lot easier than last week, I just got so confused doing it last week, but I think I’m getting the hang of it! We’ve learned a few new things and by doing some of the stuff last semester, so I understand it a lot more but there not a huge difference between the two.

Unity Tutorial 01

For this week’s unity task, we are going through a tutorial asset on Unity called "Ruby's Adventure", this differs from last semester because I was using unity to create my very own 3D game, but this semester is being changed up, so this game is actually 2D.

Firstly, I set up the game by downloading the asset and I then opened up a demo screen.

The next task was to place the main character in called "Ruby" and then set coordinates and add a script for her to move around which was C# (horizontal-vertical-input-axis)

Then when going forward with my tasks it came to designing the environment for my game in which I was actually excited to adjust and designing the tiles and painting them too ๐Ÿ˜‚

It was a bit difficult at times and the instructions weren’t really the clearest, as well as that I didn’t know you could move the palette, so it was really annoying when i found that out, but I got it all in the end thankfully.

Obviously I knew I wasn’t the best in Unity so I know that I still need to develop my skills in this but I'll get the hang of it!

Planning

In the second semester of this module, we will be writing about Games Design and Development and we all have a section each.
Everybody has their own topic in a different chapter to research and develop, in which this case I chose the chapter of "Devices" which included home game consoles and the one I chose was "Nintendo/Wii".
The reason why I chose this was topic was because  I'm not much of a gamer myself, but I used to play with these devices a lot when I was younger! There's such a variety to talk about with this console as it has multiple different uses.
I'm excited to explore deeper into this console.

We also got a "tour" off the librarian today on teams to help  and show us how to use the TUD library website and she also showed us how to Harvard reference which we will definitely use for our writing project!

Beta

So thank god Im basically finished my final game!! To be honest at the beginning I was kind of scared about making the game in the first place and it was easier than expected, but with my luck of course there was a few obstacles in the way.

From the start I think I thought I was capable of a lot more then what I had originally said to do but I wasn’t going to kill myself trying to make a perfect game when it’s not a route I would like to go down in the future.๐Ÿ˜…

In my opinion with the amount of work given to work from home, I found it quite difficult to succeed in every aspect/element of my game but im happy how it turned out!!๐Ÿ‘

I did have problems with unity from the start to finish as everyone probably knows already  since I probably commented it on everyone’s blog but I worked my way through it and after downloading and re-downloading it multiple times, but other than that it was an experience and hopefully next semester it won’t be as bad  but I reached most of my targets and im happy out with the results.

Games Testing

For the reading task this week, we were reading about the different types of the game testings.

Something that I learned by just reading the articles was “Control Testing”, which is getting a group of people from the target audience together to test a product and see what they think of it and to get more feedback . The reading made me realise that you could literally spend hours and hours even months making a game and it may not be peoples, and you’ll just have to deal with it is quite a long process, but each little bit of feedback helps you along the way but it will benefit in the long run and each change you make from receiving feedback , it will be better for your target audience.

Its made me open my eyes to realise I should start testing my game to see if people enjoy it but all the feedback I have gotten so far were all positive so that’s all good news.

Unity Tutorial 09

This weeks unity tutorial we learned how to add the final touches to the game.

The first video which was “Clicky Mouse” and I made a game where the boxes appear then removed one you click them and I also learned about the 2d view in the lesson which I haven’t even looked at because everything we've been doing is 3d but it looks interesting.

I learned a new method called “OnMouseDown” so when we get mouse clicks we then know when  the games over.

In the second video we learned more about skills and functionalities’ to add to our game, I added the UI and whenever I  play my game it will just update my score automatically I also learned how to click on my box and  make it explode.

In the third tutorial then, we added more UI elements to the game. I made it for the player to be able to choose the state of the game so when the player missed a box they would have to restarted the game.

Lastly I learned about “Booleans” in the third tutorial which basically is used to control the game states when the game is active it will run like making the  enemies spawn and make the game over screen come up.

Games Stories

The reading task this week was different ,it was about building a story for the game, how its made and the timeline.

There were alot of interesting facts that were in the reading documents that actually clicked to me , and one of them was that a games storie arent the same as a movie and in the article they said thats where alot of mistakes were made when making them , dont base them off movies, its not dialog.

Im not mad into games but by reading these articles like i do actually think what there saying is very true in a sense. If you base a game off a movie, youll know the ending and there needs to be different paths to take, and if a game is mostly dialoge.. youll just get bored very easily.

The article then discusses how stories are conflict, theres always a good person/hero and theres an obstacle they have to over come.

In which if you actually take a step back and think about it thats so true, even when i was making my game i just always thought of ok well whos the good person? what are the obstacles?

I actually found the articles very interesting to read!!
