Doing Reading 05

For this weeks reading task we were analysing our own individual annotated bibliography's which we had to then look at the key terms and information we had gathered from the previous weeks.

We had to come up with themes that we were going to use when highlighting the key terms in order to show what is stated and what topic it lies under

For all of my research for my bibliographys, everything related back to health with different circumstances, so it was kind of difficult to come up with different themes. As I was reading back over it still baffled me how the Nintendo Wii can actually improve your physical and mental health in so many different ways, including medically for the elderly, or even people with diseases.

The themes I then decided to have were what was related back to my chosen articles, as I said before it was difficult as it was all to do with health but these are the ones I chose:

  1. Health in a Game
  2.  Effect / Benefits on the individuals
  3.  Why it physically highlights GDD

Unity Tutorial 04

For this week’s unity tasks, it was not too bad at all. I just learned how to duplicate sprites which was kind of interesting and is a good tool and very quick and easy way to duplicate things instead of doing it all one at a time.

I also learned how to move the enemy robots  and how to make ruby take damage when she runs into enemies. The tutorials are teaching me more about the coding part which actually really helps as its so easy to follow and they give step by step instructions.

The tutorials have not been too bad this semester, bar from my unity that keeps freezing but I had the same problem last semester, however I think I am finding the learning part better than last because I know the gist of what I am doing but hopefully what I know now from all these unities will help me in the game jam coming up.

Reading 04 Analysis

I'm continuing doing my annotated bibliography's from last week and I have been finding  them so interesting how beneficial the Nintendo Wii can be in so many different areas!๐Ÿ˜‚

For now, im trying my best to keep up with doing all the reading tasks each week and I still have to fix up my ones from last week as I didn't hit the word count!

I struggled with finding interesting topics at the start and was really confused and frustrated because all of mine related back to the elderly and their health and wellbeing with a Nintendo Wii, so I just kept referring back to GDD to make my point, i talked to Shaun about this issue and he said I was on the right track so it was all ok in the end.

As I said, a lot of my topics related back to helping the elderly in some sort of way which I found so interesting, so here's a few pictures I found to which were related to them

Unity Tutorial 03

So, for this week’s tutorial, I did the third unity tutorial!  In the lesson I learned how to allow Ruby to go through the Metal Cube sprite without colliding with the metal cubes.  Next I also learned from the tutorial how to set the pivot of the sprite so we can rotate it and I then added a physics system to the game which controls all the movements when we push a box.

I honestly hope I can improve my skills in Unity because I keep finding them kind of difficult, but from learning little bits in the tutorials I see that a lot of it can be applied to different types of game design like collision etc.

The tutorials are just a little tedious for me but Unity and games like this in general are just not my strongest point! However, I do feel like these tutorials are a little harder but maybe that is a good thing to challenge me! But so far so good..

Reading 03

 Annotated Bibliography's

So for my annotated bibliography's they were all mostly towards the health element as it all included the Nintendo Wii Fit.

As I began to research I became more and more interested as to what could the Wii Fit benefit to people with a disorder etc , and I came across the case study of Parkinson patients using the Wii Fit to help them improve their balance which I  found to be amazing. You would never think that a video game console could be used to improve your health.
As much as it is called "Wii Fit" when I used to play it when I was younger it was more so to play the activities like golf and bowling which was so fun, I never thought it could actually improve someone's health in such a way that it could improve and disease/disorder they had.

I tried to find more imformation to do with just the Nintento itselfs but it lacked information it was all leaning towards the Wii Fit and health aspect!

Here is a link to my annotated bibliography's!

Unity Tutorial 02

So in this weeks Unity tasks, we had to decorate our 2D game, this is probably my favourite aspect of the  2D game because I love decorating things and it’s fun to personalise especially when you’re making a game, although I’m not the best at it I still gave it a good try!

There wasn’t a lot of coding which I was happy about because I do find that part a little tedious and annoying because if you even get one letter or a dot in the wrong place you could be so stressed out to why nothings linking or working, but luckily, I didn’t have any errors doing it today.  We then learned how to create blocking movements for the players by using box colliders which just let the objects to collied, pretty sure we also used these in the first semester as well because the control rang a bell

The tutorial this week was a lot easier than last week, I just got so confused doing it last week, but I think I’m getting the hang of it! We’ve learned a few new things and by doing some of the stuff last semester, so I understand it a lot more but there not a huge difference between the two.

Unity Tutorial 01

For this week’s unity task, we are going through a tutorial asset on Unity called "Ruby's Adventure", this differs from last semester because I was using unity to create my very own 3D game, but this semester is being changed up, so this game is actually 2D.

Firstly, I set up the game by downloading the asset and I then opened up a demo screen.

The next task was to place the main character in called "Ruby" and then set coordinates and add a script for her to move around which was C# (horizontal-vertical-input-axis)

Then when going forward with my tasks it came to designing the environment for my game in which I was actually excited to adjust and designing the tiles and painting them too ๐Ÿ˜‚

It was a bit difficult at times and the instructions weren’t really the clearest, as well as that I didn’t know you could move the palette, so it was really annoying when i found that out, but I got it all in the end thankfully.

Obviously I knew I wasn’t the best in Unity so I know that I still need to develop my skills in this but I'll get the hang of it!

Planning

In the second semester of this module, we will be writing about Games Design and Development and we all have a section each.
Everybody has their own topic in a different chapter to research and develop, in which this case I chose the chapter of "Devices" which included home game consoles and the one I chose was "Nintendo/Wii".
The reason why I chose this was topic was because  I'm not much of a gamer myself, but I used to play with these devices a lot when I was younger! There's such a variety to talk about with this console as it has multiple different uses.
I'm excited to explore deeper into this console.

We also got a "tour" off the librarian today on teams to help  and show us how to use the TUD library website and she also showed us how to Harvard reference which we will definitely use for our writing project!
